Former Kamehameha Schools faculty member sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting student

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -A former Kamehameha Schools faculty member was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting a student.

James Maeda was an assistant band director at the Kapalama campus when the incidents happened.

Maeda was arrested in February 2018 after the victim’s mother checked her daughter’s phone and found evidence indicating inappropriate behavior.

Court documents revealed the extent of the relationship he allegedly had with a student when she was 14 and 15. In the documents, the victim told police that her sexual relationship started in June of 2017 and continued through February 2018.

She said they’d had oral sex and sexual intercourse multiple times at the Kapalama campus and at Maeda’s home. The two also had sex at her home when her parents weren’t there.

Maeda was later charged with nine counts of first-degree sex assault and one count of third-degree sex assault.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
